The breath is our first and last act in life, it is the first movement that every human performs, it is essential to metabolism, brain function, motor function and control. When attempting to achieve greater flexibility, lose fat, gain muscle, pre-habilitation or re-habilitation, breathing is one of the primary keys to a successful outcome.
In the Yogic physical culture teaching the breath is essential, it is one of the primary means of gaining greater flexibility, stretching back over 3000 years, the discipline of the breath is a thread tying all of the traditions and systems together.
Oxygen is the primary key to our metabolism (breaking down=catabolism and building up=anabolism). At the most fundamental and simple level, energy transfer in the body takes place either Aerobically or Anaerobically, either with or without oxygen. If there is a deficit in the breath, your metabolism will not be optimized. Also, the body functions and improves when two things are present.

In the 5 Rings System “Cardio” is not a word that means run like a hamster or work till you drop.
The Breath is vital to maximizing strength. Whether you are a man or a woman, child or adult, elite athlete or cube dwelling desk jockey. The use of breathing exercises will help you to oxygenate the blood for maximum contraction on your heaviest lifts and maximum efficiency on your endurance efforts. You can use breath work to create your own Hyperbaric chamber to maximize your recovery potential.
Pre-Habilitation/Re-Habilitaion:There is a growing body of evidence showing that without proper breathing, the brain does not function at its full capacity. When the brain is deprived of oxygen, the survival of the organism is threatened and all things not dedicated to that primal urge to draw another breath and keep moving are compromised with it. This means that digestion, removal of waste, building new tissue, vision, balance, hearing, sleep, sex, all take a back seat to just getting our brain fed.
You will not lose fat, gain muscle, or have full access to your body unless your lizard brain is happy.
If you are trying to avoid or rehab an injury, without some attention to our breathing, we are sabotaging the work, and negatively impacting the outcome.
